I am trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR) to treat trauma, PTSD, anxiety and depressive symptoms. EMDR is an evidence-based treatment that helps clients create a shift that is necessary to disrupt negative or harmful patterns, change negative beliefs, and resolve underlying symptoms.
My experience includes working with people affected by physical abuse, emotional abuse, sexual abuse, car accidents, sudden grief and loss, extreme life stress, depression and anxiety that has greatly interfered and impacted their lives.
Trauma results from disturbing or distressing experiences. Trauma can be disruptive to a person’s health, thoughts, emotions, sensations, attachment and relationships. A traumatic event, particularly one involving a threat of physical harm, can develop symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).These symptoms can include the following:
Intense, distressing memories of the event/Flashbacks
Depression
Excessive anxiety
Anger and irritability
Social isolation
Sleep issues
Childhood Trauma: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs)
When physiological trauma occurs early in life, the impact can be lifelong. ACEs are potentially traumatic events that can have negative, lasting effects on a person's health and well-being. For example, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in Missouri, 46 percent of children have had at least one ACE.
Research shows ACEs can trigger stress reactions in children. Over a prolonged period of time, this stress (known as toxic stress) can inhibit healthy child development and even change the brain’s structure. ACEs have been linked to numerous negative outcomes in adulthood, and research has increasingly identified effects of ACEs in childhood.
ACE’s can include:
Abuse -psychological, physical, sexual, incest
Severe neglect or loss
Victim/witness of political terrorism, nuclear disasters, acts of crime, domestic violence,
kidnapping, natural disaster, etc.
Divorce, sudden death of family member
Living with someone who misuses substances
Living with someone who has a mental health problem
Having an incarcerated household member
I am trained in Imago Relationship Therapy to work with couples and families to help them relate better with one another and to cope with family issues in healthier ways. I work to help support couple's that struggle with dealing with conflict, affairs, blended families, ineffective communication and negative relationship patterns.
Utilizing the Imago Dialogue tools, I help couples learn how to remove the blame, shame and criticism common in negative relationship patterns and transform their relationship into one full of understanding and deep connection. I help each partner discover their relationship triggers and reactive behaviors that may stem from unmet needs and guidance in how to respond to your partner in a healthy way that benefits you both.
